Today three out of four Europeans live in towns and cities. Urban areas concentrate most of the environmental challenges facing our society but also bring together commitment and innovation to resolve them. The European Green Capital Award has been conceived to promote and reward these efforts.

The award is given to a city that:

  • Has a consistent record of achieving high environmental standards;
  • Is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development;
  • Can act as a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practices to all other European cities.

The award aims to provide an incentive for cities to inspire each other and share best practices, while at the same time engaging in friendly competition. In other words, the cities become role models for each other.

There are two stages to the competition; firstly we send a technical submission of twelve sections (listed below) which are considered by technical experts. Their scores are then used to shortlist 3 or 4 which are invited to present to a Jury, who then choose the winner. The shortlist for the 2014 competition, which we have entered, will be announced in mid April 2012, and the winner will be announced in June 2012.

We will be adding page links to the list of subjects below that will give you a summary of each of the sections of our technical bid. The full document as submitted to the EUGC technical panel will be available for you to download at the end of each summary.
