Would you like to become a Community Recycling Volunteer?

December 21, 2011

The new waste and recycling contract with waste management company May Gurney will help Bristol City reach its three-year goal of sending zero untreated waste to landfill. It will boost the city’s recycling rates and save the council £2.5 million in costs each year.

Resource Futures are working with Bristol City Council and May Gurney to inform the residents of Bristol about changes to the waste and recycling services. By July 2012, as part of the new service, all Bristol residents living in a house will have mixed plastics and Tetra Pak collections from their kerbside. This will be in addition to the current recycling collections. Where conditions allow residents living in flats will have these materials introduced later in the year.

The new service will consist of:

A new green box for plastics, tetrapaks, cans and cardboard

The existing black box which will be used for paper, glass, textiles, batteries, spectacles and engine oil

The existing brown kitchen caddy and larger brown bin for food waste

A new, slightly smaller wheelie bin for non-recyclable waste

The existing garden waste collection for those residents who have opted for it.

Collection of garden waste sacks will be by request only

As part of this contract there will be a number of exciting volunteering opportunities. We are looking for people to help spread the message about the new scheme, to help other residents understand how and what to recycle and to help out at road shows and other events. Travel expenses and full training will be provided.
