SeaCycler: Bristol’s own litter fishing boat
31st March 2022
Partnership Member, Sustainable Hive, are a Bristol-based award-winning education consultants specialising in engaging young minds and supporting teachers. They own and operate SeaCycler, which is just one of many ways they engage with communities and local children, running educational SeaCycler trips for Bristol school children and using the donations received to fund other curriculum-linked education resources and trips, which teach about marine pollution, plastics, recycling and much more. Clare Marshall, Director, shares more information about SeaCycler in this blog.
Did you know that Bristol has its own litter fishing boat?!
‘SeaCycler’ (as seen on ITV) is one of only 6 boats of its kind in the World; a fishing boat made from recycled, single use plastic. Weighing 1 ton, 8,000 plastic bottles were used in her construction – that’s 99% recycled PET plastic.
SeaCycler plastic fishing trips happen around Bristol Harbour and are perfect for businesses and organisations keen to make the most of their corporate volunteering opportunities, whilst doing their bit for the environment.
Everyone who comes aboard plays a part to improve our harbourside and remove waste before it reaches the Bristol channel and then our oceans. Trips include learning about marine plastics, recycling and the circular economy as well as offering a great way to give back and have some fun along the way – the challenge of ‘catching’ litter whilst on the move and the satisfaction of clearing accumulated litter! Shipmates can experience first-hand the impact of our lifestyles on the local environment and businesses can make a difference to our local ecosystem: every year, an estimated 8 million tonnes of litter enters the world’s oceans. We can all do our part to reduce the global problem of plastic.
We’d love to invite fellow Partnership members to come litter fishing with us! Boat trips host up to 9 people at a time (max. weight 810kg) and there are plenty of options to keep the land based crew busy whilst waiting for their turn to go plastic fishing – just ask us!
